Smaller outlying markets are among the hottest housing markets in the nation. In particular, several California markets are seeing rising demand for housing, but it’s mostly the smaller cities within the Golden State that are seeing the most activity as affordability becomes a more pressing issue.
A year ago, realtor.com®’s monthly analysis of the hottest housing markets was once dominated by large California markets like San Francisco and San Jose, also two of the nation’s priciest markets. But smaller metros are now seeing more housing activity since the pandemic.
Realtor.com® researchers identified the top-performing housing markets for the month by factoring in where homes are selling the fastest and which markets are seeing the most activity in home searches at its site.
The following are the top 15 housing markets since February, according to realtor.com®:

2. Yuba City, Calif.
- Median listing price: $450,000
3. Stockton, Calif.
- Median listing price: $487,000
4. Burlington, N.C.
- Median listing price: $275,000
5. Concord, N.H.
- Median listing price: $371,000
6. Springfield, Ohio
- Median listing price: $154,000
7. Janesville, Wis.
- Median listing price: $225,000
8. Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
- Median listing price: $872,000
9. Colorado Springs, Colo.
- Median listing price: $548,000
10. Spokane, Wash.
- Median listing price: $400,000
11. Santa Cruz, Calif.
- Median listing price: $987,000
12. Ogden, Utah
- Median listing price: $475,000
13. Sacramento, Calif.
- Median listing price: $589,000
14. Reno, Nev.
- Median listing price: $585,000
